My life seemed to be over. All of the social things and places I would normally go to announced closures. I felt like the world had just tripped on a tree root and face planted in the ground. The Covid-19 pandemic is a very interesting thing, because for the first time in human history, the whole world, every single person in that world, feels the effects personally. What felt like some far off news story about a small Chinese village soon changed my life, but only when it became personal to me. When Covid-19 did hit my life, I had a choice to make. I could simply sit back and let the circumstances determine my attitude or I could take control of my mind, take the new free time I was given and use it to the fullest, and pour my energies into work, making sure my days wouldn’t be wasted.
The first point is probably one of the most challenging, and one that I had some trouble with at the start. Things like news and other forms of media like to set a tone for everyone to lock into. It’s usually one of fear, or anxiety. It can feel trapping sometimes, like you’ve lost yourself in this sea of fear and worry. Once I finally realized that I was the only one who should be able to control my mind, it was an incredibly freeing thought. There are some things that can help you to keep in control of your mind, things like limiting the amount of time you spend sifting through the news, limiting social media time, and spending more time doing things that allow you to grow and keep your mind in a healthy place.
The second thing that I decided was to try to use the extra free time for projects and things that I have been wanting to do, but never made the time for. Trying to schedule out my days as best I could to hit all the things I wanted to do, like playing guitar, reading, and writing. When you have so much time on your hands, it can almost feel overwhelming at the start: it’s amazing how much you can fit into a day.
The last thing that I wanted to make sure I did was to use my new found time to pour into my work. My dad has owned an internet marketing agency for a very long time, and about a year ago hit on an idea for a new company, designing and building slimline backdrops for video meetings and working from home. Working and schooling from home is something that we have been doing all along, when the world decided to meet us in it. Covid-19 and the Coronavirus Pandemic have actually helped my dad’s new company, having so many more people working from home and needing his product. I have been super blessed with having such an amazing job opportunity in a time that finding a job is next to impossible.
All in all, this is a crazy time for everyone, and I mean everyone. But just as we have shown in the past, humanity’s ingenuity is spurred on by crisis. We will beat this and come out stronger for it, just as we have done with crises in the past. And while yes, we all have our bad days, our grumpy days, our depression ridden days, we all have a common enemy in this crisis. And we will make it to the other side. Together.
